Until very recently I associated pH levels only with facial skin and it blew my mind to know that pH levels played an important role in strength of our hair.

A pH scale of 0-6 is acidic, 7 is neutral and 8-14 is alkaline. Your ideal range is between 4.5-5.5. However what happened was that I was using store bought anti dandruff shampoo and the more I used it, it disrupted my pH balance. This resulted in breaking of hair due to poor hair strength and since my scalp was more alkaline, more of the oils got affected, resulting in dry scalp and dandruff. In short, using a product that maintains pH balance gives you the following benefits:

  • Moisture maintenance - Moisture is important for your glossy and lush looking healthier-looking hair. When you lose this, naturally it looks dry with no lustre. You could use a pH solution or even a conditioner that helps with the same.
  • Protection from harmful bacteria - A healthy pH level helps seal hair cuticles and keep the natural oils in the scalp intact. This keeps away any bacteria and fungus.
  • Enable growth - Many products we use could be causing the hair follicles to release moisture, causing the hair to be dry and brittle. Products with good pH balance cleanse the hair and remove dead cells, without removing moisture from the hair, hence supporting hair growth.

You could supplement the pH lotion with Petitgrain oil (extract from bitter orange) and Melissa oil to promote relaxation for your stressed scalp and to help with reducing appearance of skin imperfections.
